Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974

This is primary legislation governing safety at work (HSWA). The Act is not specific to asbestos. It gives a framework for the protection and responsibilities of those working-in and owning non-domestic premises in terms of employee and public safety. It may apply to non-employees such as building contractors, IT engineers, etc. visiting premises to do work such as installing or maintaining equipment and fittings, refurbishment, etc. The following documents are as enacted.

HSG248 – Asbestos: The analysts’ guide for sampling, analysis and clearance procedures

This is the Health and Safety Executive’s 2006 first edition of HSG248. It is a fairly technical document detailing good practice with regard to surveying, sampling, public and employee safety, demolition, and the encapsulation of asbestos.

This publication consolidates and updates technical guidance from a number of HSE sources, including previously published guidance note (EH10 – ISBN 0717609073 – MDHS – ISBN 0717606775 and MDHS39/4 – ISBN 0717611132)
